BEGINNINGS
The first Conference of the Catholic Bishops of Malaysia and Singapore was convened at the Redemptorist Monastery in Singapore on July 1967, attended by His Grace Archbishop Michel Olcomendy, Archbishop of Malacca-Singapore, Bishop Dominic Vendargon, Bishop of Kuala Lumpur, Monsignor Ignatius Aloysius, representing Bishop Francis Chan, Bishop of Penang, Bishop Jan Vos of Kuching, Bishop of Jesselton and Bishop Anthony Galvin, Bishop of Miri and Brunei.
The conference includes as members all diocesan bishops and those equivalent to them in law, all coadjutor bishops, auxiliary bishops and other titular bishops who exercise in the territory a special office assigned to them by the Apostolic See or by Canon 450.2
From its humble beginnings, the Catholic Bishops Conference has evolved from its first meeting of five members in 1967 to its present membership of 11. The jurisdiction covered by its members remains somewhat the same, but the Catholic population, the clergy and religious has grown manifolds in the past six decades.
