6th Decade

The Plenary meeting is held two times a year in any place decided upon by the Conference. The President shall call an extraordinary meeting when an urgent need arises. The Apostolic Nuncio/Delegate may be invited to meet and address the members at the Plenary Meeting.

6th Decade

This decade saw the retirement of five bishops and the ordination of their replacements. It was also the decade when the Conference received the appointments for two bishops to join the College of Cardinals in Rome, and the elevation of a church to minor basilica status.

In 2012, Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Hii was installed as the second Bishop of Sibu, replacing Emeritus Bishop Dominic Su. In 2013, Rev. Fr. Richard Ng was ordained and installed as the third Bishop of Miri, replacing Emeritus Bishop Anthony Lee. In 2014, Rev. Fr. Julian Leow was ordained and installed as the fourth Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, replacing Emeritus Archbishop Murphy Pakiam. In 2016, Rev. Fr. Bernard Paul from the Diocese of Penang was ordained and installed as the third Bishop of Melaka-Johor after the retirement of Emeritus Bishop Paul Tan. In 2017, Auxiliary Bishop Simon Poh was installed as the third Archbishop of Kuching, replacing Emeritus Archbishop John Ha.

In 2016, history was created in the CBCMSB, when Emeritus Archbishop Anthony Soter Fernandez was named by Pope Francis to join the College of Cardinals, making him the first Malaysian and the first bishop from the CBCBSM to be elevated to the ranks of Cardinal. In 2020, Bishop Cornelius Sim received the honour of being the second bishop from the Conference to join the College of Cardinals. Unfortunately he passed away less than one year later due to illness.

In 2019, the Church of St Anne in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaysia received the honour of being elevated to Minor Basilica of St Anne, intensifying the bond with the Church of Rome and with the Pope.
